Summary

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, god-decreed rivalry against the Riki clan。 Her life is brutal but simple: train to fight and fight to survive。 Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield-her brother, fighting with the enemy-the brother she watched die five years ago。 Eelyn loses her focus and is captured。

Now, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered。 But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan settling in the valley, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved Aska clan, which is rumored to have been decimated by the same horde。 She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother's friend who tried to kill her the day she was captured。 They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one。

Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and find a way to forgive her brother while daring to put her faith in the people she's spent her life killing。

I had a lot of preconceived notions about this book that were hard for me to let go but it was still a good read and I would recommend it

**Brief spoiler mentions below**It's official: Adrienne Young is my new favourite author。 I'd be shocked if I ever rated a book of hers at anything less than five stars, and I say that confidently after having only read two of her books。 I loved everything about this story。 I love the way Young crafts her plots, the way she builds characters and relationships and the magical way she puts words together。 I loved how, despite the fact that the novel was written in Eelyn's perspective, it wasn't on **Brief spoiler mentions below**It's official: Adrienne Young is my new favourite author。 I'd be shocked if I ever rated a book of hers at anything less than five stars, and I say that confidently after having only read two of her books。 I loved everything about this story。 I love the way Young crafts her plots, the way she builds characters and relationships and the magical way she puts words together。 I loved how, despite the fact that the novel was written in Eelyn's perspective, it wasn't one-sided -- it was just as easy for me to put myself in Iri's shoes as it was to put myself in Eelyn's, and truly understand why he did what he did。 I loved the ending, with Eelyn reflecting on how differently everyone's lives would've ended up if it weren't for the chain of events that was her life, and Iri's, and Fiske's。 The only question I have now is what The Girl The Sea Gave Back could possibly be about, because everything felt so neatly tied up to me。 I can't wait to find out! 5/5 stars。 。。。more

This book sucked and here is why。 I went into this book with high expectations。 How can you go wrong with a book that appeared to be about an awesome, badass Viking girl? It shouldn’t be hard to mess that up。 However, Adrienne Young failed utterly。 The MC may just win the award for the most pathetic Viking girl ever。 She had no dimension at all and was entirely created to score cool points with people who like “savvy heroines。” But it turns out she isn’t savvy at all。 Neither is the guy who is p This book sucked and here is why。 I went into this book with high expectations。 How can you go wrong with a book that appeared to be about an awesome, badass Viking girl? if I was excited for this before, I am now officially going off the walls。 I have heard a lot of good things about this one, and I LOVED the fable/namesake duology。 Adrienne Young managed to pull off pirates, I'm not putting it past her to do Vikings justice as well。 if I was excited for this before, I am now officially going off the walls。 I have heard a lot of good things about this one, and I LOVED the fable/namesake duology。 Adrienne Young managed to pull off pirates, I'm not putting it past her to do Vikings justice as well。 。。。more

Disappointing and over-hyped。 The idea was good but poorly executed in my opinion。 The imagery was vibrant and capturing, but large parts of the book lacked action。 None of the characters seemed to evolve much beyond the superficial prejudices of the rival clans。

The author‘s writing style was a refreshing contrast to the hyperbolic, sometimes senseless, sometimes overly flowery prose that one can usually find in YA novels。 Our protagonist is a Viking warrior and I think the author managed to make her a believable, relatable and strong character。 I was really glad to see a realistic portrayal of what a female soldier would think, feel and behave like。 Often, authors in YA are trying to sell us on the overly generous, altruistic killer machine that is som The author‘s writing style was a refreshing contrast to the hyperbolic, sometimes senseless, sometimes overly flowery prose that one can usually find in YA novels。 Our protagonist is a Viking warrior and I think the author managed to make her a believable, relatable and strong character。 I was really glad to see a realistic portrayal of what a female soldier would think, feel and behave like。 Often, authors in YA are trying to sell us on the overly generous, altruistic killer machine that is some weird mix of Cinderella, Lara Croft and Sherlock Holmes。 And for me, that just doesn‘t work。 But let‘s move on to our male lead。 Oh my god。 The only fault I see in his character is that he doesn‘t talk all that much throughout the novel, but that is consistent with his personality。 So we can forgive that。 But, nevertheless, if the man does open his mouth, every word is gold - brave, honest and clever。 Their romance is a slow-burn, but oh so sweet。 They end up in a loving relationship with each other, filled with forgiveness, acceptance and passion。 The kind where they literally need each other to breathe。 So if you are into that, go for this book。 In a literary landscape where you stumble upon sadistic millionaires and brooding, violent alcoholics all too often, it is important that authors like Adrienne Young show us how it‘s done。 。。。more

Wow wow wow!!!! This book is amazing and super fast paced。 It was so good I read it in a single night and could not put it down。 I’m ready to go out and buy the rest of Adrienne Young’s books because this one was just so amazing。 The enemies to lovers along with constant battle and found family was amazing and everything I was expecting。 This asking with the incorporation of mythology and history really made this book special。 I was worried that this book would be hard to start but it was such a Wow wow wow!!!! I truly enjoyed this book。 It was adventurous, had a love story, had fighting, enemy's coming together。 The only thing missing is a what comes after。 I love a epilogue to see where they end up。 I would of liked to see what happens between the main family's。 I was a little nervous picking this book I wasn't sure it was my type。 I really did like this book a worthy read。 I truly enjoyed this book。 It was adventurous, had a love story, had fighting, enemy's coming together。 The only thing missing is a what comes after。 I love a epilogue to see where they end up。 I would of liked to see what happens between the main family's。 I was a little nervous picking this book I wasn't sure it was my type。 I really did like this book a worthy read。 。。。more

Vikings。 Really, what else to you need to know? The battles were epic, the characters were great and layered, the world building was just the right amount, I could've used a little more smut though I mean come on-VIKINGS!!! But fair enough, author chose not to go there so we'll make do with good old love sigh。 Sometimes I struggled with some of the fight moves during the final battle but it was rare so 👍🏾 Vikings。 Really, what else to you need to know? Hell yes This book literally checks all of the boxes, Vikings, girls with swords and two enemies being forced in close proximity。 What more could you want?

A solid 3。5。 It wasn’t overwhelmingly impressive, but I still enjoyed it a lot。 Not every book has to be poetically written or a full five stars。 Sometimes it’s nice to read books like this, that are just easy to read and relax with。

I did NOT read this book and have no idea how it showed up on my list, especially with a 4 star review。 Has my list been hacked to give high reviews to crap books?

This book had me wishing I was a viking (even though I probably won’t survive a day there)。 I loved everything about it, the battle scenes, powerful warrior women, a thrilling and never dull pace, the characters’ emotions raw and dig deep in your heart, ENEMIES TO LOVERS! and alas, a happy ending。 I have officially found yet another comfort book that I will most likely be reading whenever I am bored or sad。 Adrienne Young you have captured my heart and my bookshelf, thank you for this blessing o This book had me wishing I was a viking (even though I probably won’t survive a day there)。 I loved everything about it, the battle scenes, powerful warrior women, a thrilling and never dull pace, the characters’ emotions raw and dig deep in your heart, ENEMIES TO LOVERS! and alas, a happy ending。 I have officially found yet another comfort book that I will most likely be reading whenever I am bored or sad。 Adrienne Young you have captured my heart and my bookshelf, thank you for this blessing of a book。 。。。more

3。7 stars。I did enjoy the story overall。 Vikings, the war between two clans, Norse mythology and gods, enemies to lovers。 You name it and this book has it!At times, I got confused with the names and people mentioned in the story。 Only a few were given a real personality。 So many of them were pushed aside, as a background。 I understand that it could've been extremely difficult to give life to each of them but I felt like we saw more of Riki than Aska。 The few I could remember was Eelyn's father a 3。7 stars。I did enjoy the story overall。 Vikings, the war between two clans, Norse mythology and gods, enemies to lovers。 You name it and this book has it!At times, I got confused with the names and people mentioned in the story。 Only a few were given a real personality。 So many of them were pushed aside, as a background。 I understand that it could've been extremely difficult to give life to each of them but I felt like we saw more of Riki than Aska。 The few I could remember was Eelyn's father and her friend。 I think there was a healer mentioned few times? Lets talk about the pros。 It was a different read, my first YA Viking book。 I'm a big fan of Vikings so it was a treat for me。 I did like Eelyn, didn't agree with her on a few occasions but I guess I never was captured and made a slave? Fiske became one of my favourite enemies to lovers boyfriend。 He was protective over Eelyn from the start。 He was presented as a good-hearted character and he lived to my expectations。 The moment, the battle broke down in the middle of the night, in the Riki's village, I couldn't put the book down! I honestly preferred the first battle over the second one。 It felt more real, without an obvious happy ending。Why didn't I give a higher score? Let me think。 It wasn't the best book I've read this year, it didn't capture my attention for long time。 I was easily distracted at a few points。 The names and some characters were confusing。 Maybe because I didn't concentrate enough but often I found myself wondering who the hell am I reading about?!If you're looking for an easy read or are thirsty for some blood spill - I'd recommend it。 Don't read the reviews, they kind of put me away and I didn't go in with an open mind。 Could probably use a re-read and maybe even come back with a higher score! 。。。more

I had so much fun reading this book; it was lyrical, engrossing, and ticked off all the checkboxes I have for an enjoyable YA novel。 And novels in generally, truly。

Sky in the Deep was a surprise hit。 I am not a YA fan and Vikings have never had much appeal to me but this book gripped me from the very first page and kept me up well into the night。 Eelyn our heroine is a freaking badass, the story is exciting, the concepts of family and tribalism are all touching and though I honestly would have preferred it be an Adult fiction for a little spice, not much else was missing 4。5⭐
